I believe I also had tested a Winbond W29EE011 with success (those chips are
frequently used as main BIOS ROMs on motherboards), though I didn't try
programming it on-card, and the programming codes might be slightly
different from ROM to ROM.

I also think some Flash memories provide for permanent write-protection of
at least the bootblock.

I never tried a standard EPROM, although the idea of one actually damaging
the card itself surprised me a little...  Maybe if I took one and *threw* it
really hard at the 3c905 it might damage it :)

Who knows, maybe the pinouts are a little bit different between 1mbit flash and
1mbit eproms....
