Diskless client with kernel 2.4.18 cannot boot

The following error message was given while booting a diskless machine using
kernel 2.4.18. The message was something like this:

...
Looking up port of RPC 100003/2 on 192.168.1.250
RPC: sendmsg returned error 101
portmap: RPC call returned error 101
Root-NFS: unable to get nfsd port number from server, using default

Root-NFS: server returned error 101 while mounting /tftpboot/client1
VFS: unable to mount root fs via NFS, trying floppy.
...

But, when I used kernel 2.2.14 for the diskless client it worked fine.
The server machine is the same one running kernel 2.4.18 with the necessary
services turned on.

Any idea?

Thanks.
