Ok what a twit I am! You're right! Many thanks.
I buy these cards in bulk and never did look at the (Windows) drivers
stuff that came on the disk. Turns out there's a configuration utility
and buried in that there's an option to enable the Bootrom on the card
(and set it's size).
Having done that everythings works like a peach.
