I would say, depends on ... We are using over with over 100 clients (linux
X terminals and diskless X stations) the cheap RTL8139 based adaptors.
They work fine with etherboot and dont make much trouble with the clients.

For the servers we use tuilp based adaptors. For the older terminals we
run the rtl8029 PCI adaptors and some ISA NE2000 clones.
