Booting a COM file off a compact flash disk

Hi,

I'd like to ether/netboot a small embedded board off an IDE compact flash
disk without having to put a kernel on the CFdisk (and hence, use loadlin).
Reason to use DOS: switch the graphics hardware to drive a PAL TV before
the kernel boots. Markus sent me some hints how to re-enable the making of
COM files in the Makefile but I seem to be too silly to get it done. Does
anyone have an archive of old Makefiles which still allowed to compile a
COM file? Or concrete hints? 4.4.2 does not appear to contain anything like
this.

TIA!
