You might want to check out the page:

Where they have a diskless workstation kernel package put together, and 
available for download as a tar file. It has documentation and various 
config file examples.

You may want to especially look at the 'config.ne2000' file, which shows 
the options used to build the kernel.  They are using a 2.2.9 kernel.
