PARD: Utilities
cipe is a system for simple, yet reasonably secure IP encryption. It sends
encrypted datagrams encapsulated in UDP. It is not compatible with IPSEC or
anything else (except my other prototype implementation). Very lightweight
and easy to handle. Comes with full description of the protocol and usage
examples.
This package can be used to build virtual private networks, i.e.
secure interconnection of subnetworks on top of the Internet. I use it in
such a situation for some months now.
EPAN is a protocol analyzer for ethernet networks. The program allows you to
display the received frames either in an overview mode or in a frame detail
mode. It is also possible to create a few statistics (frame size
distribution, utilization or protocol statistics).
Ethereal is a utility that lets you capture and analyze network traffic.
IPTraf is a Linux-based network monitor and statistics generator for IP
LANs. With this program, you can get an idea as to the type of IP traffic
passing over your network, the loads of the various hosts connected to it,
and the activity of the entire segment.
Features:
- An IP traffic monitor that shows information on the IP traffic passing
over your network. Includes TCP flag information, packet and byte counts,
ICMP details, OSPF packet types, and oversized IP packet warnings
-
General and detailed interface statistics showing IP, TCP, UDP, ICMP, non-IP
and other IP packet counts, IP checksum errors, interface activity, packet
size counts.
- A TCP and UDP service monitor showing counts of incoming and
outgoing packets for common TCP and UDP application ports
- An Ethernet
statistics module that discovers active hosts and shows statistics showing
the data activity on them
- TCP, UDP, and other protocol display filters,
allowing you to view only traffic you're interested in.
- Logging
-
Supports Ethernet, SLIP, PPP, and loopback interface types.
- Utilizes the
built-in raw socket interface of the Linux kernel, allowing it to be used
over a wide range of supported network cards.
An extensible service monitor which can be used to watch network resources.
It supports parallelization, a flexible configuration file, and can send out
email, alpha pages, or other types of alerts upon detection of the failure
of a service. Service monitors that come with the distribution can test for
ping, telnet, ftp, smtp, http, nntp, pop3, imap, disk space, and SNMP
queries.
mtr combines the functionaly of the traceroute and ping
programs in a single network diagnostic tool.
As mtr starts, it investigates the network connection between the host mtr
runs on and a user-specified destination host. After it determines the
address of each network hop between the machines, it sends a sequence ICMP
echo requests to each one to determine the quality of the link to each
machine. As it does this, it prints running statistics about each machine.
net-tools is a collection of programs that form the base set of the NET-3
networking distribution for the Linux operating system. It contains the
important tools for controlling the network subsystem of the Linux kernel
including arp, hostname, ifconfig, netstat, rarp and route.
