PARD: Utilities

cipe

cipe is a system for simple, yet reasonably secure IP encryption. It sends encrypted datagrams encapsulated in UDP. It is not compatible with IPSEC or anything else (except my other prototype implementation). Very lightweight and easy to handle. Comes with full description of the protocol and usage examples.

This package can be used to build virtual private networks, i.e. secure interconnection of subnetworks on top of the Internet. I use it in such a situation for some months now.

mtr

mtr combines the functionaly of the traceroute and ping programs in a single network diagnostic tool.

As mtr starts, it investigates the network connection between the host mtr runs on and a user-specified destination host. After it determines the address of each network hop between the machines, it sends a sequence ICMP echo requests to each one to determine the quality of the link to each machine. As it does this, it prints running statistics about each machine.
