  Yes, lookup EsounD or NAS.  EsounD has an ESPEAKER environment variable,
much like the X DISPLAY one. I don't know how NAS handles it.  Security on
ESD is ugly though. It's a first come-first serve hacked in afterthought. 
Again, I don't know how NAS handles it.  EsounD is what gnome uses, so if
your using Gnome it should just be a matter of setting ESPEAKER, and running
non-ESD apps through esddsp(fakes the OSS sound interface through ESD).
